moving onto item #2

memories of dishes in the bath tub

The house “to do” list was established when we moved into our house. items included were kitchen (check), bathroom, windows, and basement. The JOYS of owning an older home- lots of character, antiquated detail- and lots of work..ie, money!  It seems that everything needs renovated!

The major kitchen remodel that took 10 months was finished just a few months ago. I still vividly remember doing dishes in the bath tub for the last year…ugh! I came home last week to an “odd” smell in the house. Apparently nick was a little distracted from homework and started hammering away at the basement wall. Layers of plaster covered by wall paper covered by paint mixed in with some serious black mold. And now, we have a basement renovation in progress!

I was talking with Aunt Tam on the phone this weekend. She casually comments “if Nick is anything like his dad he will always have some sort of home project underway.”  She hit the nail on the head.

what? really? no one told me this!! You mean, I will ALWAYS live in distruction and disarray! oh man! On the good side, Nick is incredibly talented, creative, and diligent in all the projects he pursues :)

  1. You guys are scary! I’m trying to picture which basement room Nick is standing in????? Did you suspect mold, or was it an unexpected discovery?

  2. suspected a little mold because there has been moisture, but the wood baseboards were rotted out and smelled pretty bad. Nothing a little bleach won’t clear up though…. hopefully. Smell has died down in the house but that room still is pretty musty. A lot of the plaster peeled off the wall, but a lot of it is pretty stubborn. I want to make sure I get the paint and old walpaper off so there are not future mold problems….

  3. yuck! when we had water damage a couple years ago, we found out we had a black mold problem. make sure you don’t have this, because it’s pretty dangerous. the cost to get it all removed: 1500 bucks. have fun… :)

  4. I love a good project…..onward and upward!!
